English : Remember, remember the 5th of November – Bonfire Night

Each year, on November 5th, English people get together around bonfires to burn the puppet of Guy Fawkes, the man who tried to kill the King James – King of England  in 1605, by blowing up Westminster Palace on the day of the Parliament opening. He was discovered and put to death but his memory remains in English customs: burning the Guy is to ward off evil spirits and since 1605 each year, on the day of the Opening , the Houses of Parliament are searched before the arrival of the Queen to the Parliament.

  1. The tradition of Guy Fawkes-related bonfires actually began the very same year as the failed plot. The Plot was discovered in the night between the 4th and 5th of November 1605. Already on the 5th, Londoners who knew little more than that their King had been saved, joyfully lit bonfires to thank. As years progressed, however, the ritual became more elaborated.

  3. « Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
    The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
    I see of no reason
    Why Gunpowder Treason
    Should ever be forgot.
    Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t’was his intent
    To blow up King and Parliament.
    Three-score barrels of powder below
    To prove old England’s overthrow;
    By God’s providence he was catch’d
    With a dark lantern and burning match.
    Holloa boys, holloa boys, let the bells ring.
    Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King! »
